Lesson from a tea cup

Our challenge is to transcend time and space, pursue universality, accept diversity, and freely cross academic fields from the bowls in our daily lives.

About lesson from a tea cup

By observing carefully, we can find universal structures and laws common to various systems related to the latest findings, even though we are not usually conscious of such things as ordinary tea bowls and hot/cold water in daily life.

In this omnibus class, we will start from the famous essay by physicist Torahiko Terada (1878-1935), "Chawan-no-yu (ちゃわんのゆ, 茶碗の湯 in Japanese),". Then, we try to relive the essay. In addition, the lecture will focus on teacups and hot water (tea) as vessels, which Terada did not mention in the essay.

There will also be lectures on how to approach Torahiko Terada's way of thinking manner, interdisciplinary research, research liberty, and research that is closely related to the discovery and solution of real-world problems.

Through "Chawan-no-yu," we provide students with the opportunity to free themselves from all preconceptions and prejudices, to move freely between academic fields, and to acquire knowledge and train their thinking from a variety of perspectives and viewpoints. The 2021 semester's class was offered in-person + online.

The purpose of this course

  2. To focus on ordinary things that we see in our daily lives and think and criticise them scientifically. In addition, we will discuss these things in our daily lives from various perspectives across academic fields. In some cases, we try to incorporate the lecture about customs, culture, and history associated with "Chawan-no-yu".
  4. Students will learn concretely that discovering phenomena and laws can contribute to science and be closely related to the discovery and solution of real-world problems.

Target
1st and 2nd-grade students.
Students in any division who are interested in life science are welcome.
Number of students
Approximately 30-70 students.
in-preson: The number of students who can take the course will vary depending on the content of the experience or experiment. On line: There is no limit to the number of students who can take online courses. If there are many applicants for the course, there is a possibility of selection.
Offering period
Fall/Winter (A) semester (13 sessions total)
Class format
Classes consist of two parts: the classroom part, the workshop or the experiment part. Both will be conducted in a face-to-face + online hybrid format, but we recommend face-to-face participation in the experiment part.
Teaching method
Classroom lecture: teacher in charge or guest
Workshop/Experiment: Conducted in the laboratory
A lecturer will give this lecture in a field related to "Chawan-no-yu" each time. Under the Coronavirus situations, some lecturers will distribute to students who wish to have a teaching material kit demonstrated and experimented with in advance. We will also try a new style of hands-on lessons that better use the online environment using such teaching material kits and free simulators.
Classroom Management
After the students are selected by lottery, communication regarding the content of this class will be conducted through Google classroom using the university's "eccs cloud email" account for class management, communication, and sharing of reference materials. Individual consultations that do not require sharing information with the entire class will be handled through a dedicated class email.
Place of the classroom
On line: Zoom session in-person: KOMCEE EAST 3F educational development Laboratory (KEEDL3F)

General flow

There is a tea bowl here. It is filled with hot water. It may not seem exciting or mysterious if you just look at it, but you will gradually notice various minute details and start to have many questions if you pay close attention. But if you observe, you will see progressively different minute things and begin to have many questions. So even a cup of hot water is quite an exciting sight for those who like to observe and study natural phenomena.

Chawan no Yu," by Torahiko Terada, Aozora Bunko, translated by Isao Kashima

First, we read "Chawan no Yu," and then the lesson unfolds in an omnibus format.

Grade evaluation
